The fall season is right on the horizon as everyone gets back into their school year routines. As September brings cooler weather, Huskers are getting ready to heat things up with school spirit. This is also a month for remembrance, as we honor the fallen in the 9/11 terror attacks.
From Husker spirit events like the beginning of Homecoming season to ways you can honor the fallen, here’s a list of five things to make the most of your September:
Cornhuskers vs Bobcats | Memorial Stadium
11 a.m. Sept. 5
Thousands of fans in red cheering, an electric atmosphere and good ol’ American football. If that sounds appealing to you, this is just the event to put in your schedule. Head on down to cheer on the Huskers to victory in their season opener! For a full season schedule and to get your tickets today, click here.
9/11 Day: Unite for Good | On Campus
All through September
Many of us remember the tragic events of 9/11, and every year we remember one of the darkest days in American history. As a 2026 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps grantee, Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement UNL is proud to be part of a nationwide movement commemorating the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11.
There will be acts of service and remembrance throughout the entire month that the Husker community can join to remember the fallen.

Fiesta On the Green | Nebraska Union Plaza

The Hispanic heritage is one of vibrancy, family and diversity. So, for Hispanic Heritage Month, Nebraska is once again celebrating Fiesta On the Green. Open to students, faculty, staff, and the public, the event will feature plenty of food and entertainment to round out the end of the month.
Family Weekend brings families together
Sept. 25 to 27
Saying goodbye can be difficult, especially as children go off to college to learn independence, some for the first time in their lives. That’s why we’re bringing families together before the semester ramps up and students get too busy.
Family weekend will begin at the Scarlet Hotel with a welcome reception and allow families to explore campus, have fun and make new memories. Click here for a full schedule.
Celebrate the Husker spirit with homecoming | On Campus
Sept. 27 to Oct. 3
Finally, as September comes to a close, we’re ramping up the school spirit with homecoming! Blast off to space with Herbie, because this year’s theme is Cosmic Cornhuskers.
