SVO VP Jordan Janssen attends SVA Leadership Institute

    Jordan Janssen
    2018 Leadership Institute
The Student Veterans of America is one of the youngest veteran support networks in the United States. This organization was formed in January 2008 to support veterans on college campuses. The SVA has over 1,500 affiliated chapters with over 700,000 student veterans on campuses across America. They are also helping veterans in countries such as Australia to form their own student veteran support network and advocacy groups. A graduation ceremony for just over a hundred leading student veterans was held in Washington DC at the end of September at the 7th annual Student Veterans Leadership Institute.
This leadership institute was attended by one hundred of the top student veteran chapter leaders from across the United States. This institute provided attendees with a four-day intensive learning and growing experience. It also included the opportunity to hear from some current leaders in Washington. Such as Acting Deputy Secretary at the Department of Veteran Affairs James Byrne and retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, who is currently a National Security Advisor for Vice President Mike Pence. We also got to hear from Medal of Honor recipient Kyle White. Attendees also had the chance to hear from leaders in the business sector as well. Prudential’s Jim Beamesderfer as well as LinkedIn’s Daniel Savage gave us incite to leadership and potential in the business sector.
The leadership institute also include breakout sessions. In these small group sessions, we got to know people from many different walks of life and experiences. The breakouts gave people the chance to learn about themselves and the way others see the world. The chance to learn from others that face some of the same challengers on campus as you are something that I hope everyone gets the opportunity to experience. This leadership institute was a very intensive and immersive experience. That was very informative and led to some great bonding and relationship building as well. There are many things that one can take away from an experience like that. The one that I found most important and wish to share with you is that you need to understand who you are and what values you have. That you can learn a lot about yourself by talking with others and understanding their values and expressing your values to them to better understand yourself. Then you need to look at how you brand yourself to the rest of the world. Do the values the rest of the world see from you reflect your core values? For some this can be easy for others very difficult. But, when you leave college and join the work force in whatever capacity you see best understanding this about yourself is essential.
This experience is one that I will never forget. The different leaders from across the United States that I got to know. The stories and experiences we shared together is one that only comes once in a great while. The learning and understanding we went through together as brothers in sisters in this new phase of our growing processes is one to be proud of. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me and the people that I got to know during that time. I hope others will take the opportunity, when it presents itself to them, to go participate in an event like this. Thank You Student Veterans of America for putting this on for us and Thank You Prudential for sponsoring such a great event.
