Military Service Deployment Checklist

As a student enrolled in any class or program offered through the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL) and if called to active duty, scheduled to deploy, and or receive training through military service in which you are required to report to your military unit prohibits you from completing the semester in which you are enrolled, the University of Nebraska, Office of the President, Executive Memorandum Number 23 was established to aid in facilitating your ability to prepare for military service and continue your education once your military service is completed. 

This Military Service Checklist is designed to assist you with the recommended steps to take prior to your deployment and when re-enrolling in classes at UNL.

Before You Leave: 

  • Schedule an appointment with Joe Brownell, Executive Director of Military Relations and Military & Veteran Success Center. Joe can be reached at (402) 472-5276 or jbrownell2@unl.edu
    • Provide a copy of your military orders or a memorandum from your unit with anticipated active duty dates. 
    • Review the impact on current class schedule and arrange to contact instructors. 
    • Go over the impact on related fees associated with housing, parking, etc., and begin communication with the respective support service office(s). 
    • Receive a copy of Executive Memorandum Number 23 
  • Contact and meet with all of your Instructors: 
    • Inform your instructors of your upcoming military obligated service.  Discuss your available options (i.e. complete the coursework online, withdraw from classes, receive an incomplete, etc.)   
  • Contact and meet with your Academic Advisor: 
    • Discuss the impact on your course requirements and long-range degree plans.  Be sure to present a copy of your military orders and Executive Memorandum Number 23. 

Things to talk through with your Instructor(s) and Academic Advisor: 

  • Option 1: I will leave after the final day of the term. 
    • Do not enroll in the next term. If you have already enrolled, drop your classes prior to the first day of the term.     
  • Option 2: I will leave during the term and plan to withdraw completely. 
    • Work with your Academic Advisor and Department to let both know about your military orders and your wish to withdraw from all classes. Be sure to contact the MVSC with your game plan. Some extra paperwork may be required.  
  • Option 3: I will leave during the semester, and I do not want to withdraw completely. 
    • Work with your Academic Advisor and each instructor as soon as possible to determine how you can finish the term.   
      • Take an incomplete – You may be able to complete a course that is nearly done.  If the instructor agrees, you can arrange a temporary grade of Incomplete (I) and finish the course at a later date.  You will receive an “F” if you do not complete the course.   
      • Receive a final grade – If the instructor feels that you have completed a sufficient amount of the coursework, the instructor may assign you a final grade.   
      • Complete coursework early – If this is appropriate, given the nature of the class and the discretion of the instructor. 
      • Drop some courses – Ensure that you work with your instructors and Academic Advisor through this process.  Contact between our Academic Advisor and the MVSC is needed to ensure that this is handled correctly.     
  • Contact the Military & Veteran Success Center (MVSC) at (402) 472-4130 or vetsuccess@unl.edu.  You can also stop by the MVSC located in Room 16 of the lower level of the Nebraska Union. 
  • Contact and meet with a Husker Hub Specialist at (402) 472-2030 or huskerhub@unl.edu.  Ask about any impact on scholarships or financial aid you are receiving.   
  • Contact Housing: 
    • On-Campus:  Ensure your Residence Assistant (RA) is aware of your military service and contact your Residence Director (RD) to discuss your contract and check-out procedures.  You may be entitled to a pro-rated refund.  University Housing can be contacted at (402) 472-3561 or housing@unl.edu
    • Off-Campus:  Contact your landlord and make sure they are aware of your military service orders. 
    • Contact Student Legal Services (free) if additional assistance is needed regarding your rental contract at (402) 472-3350 or unl.edu/asun/sls.  
  • Contact Dining Services at housing.contracts@unl.edu.  Cancel your meal plan (if applicable).  All requests to cancel must be in writing, either in an email or a letter.  Ensure you provide a copy of your military service orders as you may also be entitled to a pro-rated refund.   
  • Contact Athletic Department (402) 472-3111and Parking Services (402) 472-1800 and inquire about a pro-rated refund if necessary. 
  • Return any items to the University Library to ensure you are not charged for items that exceed the due date because of your military service. 
  • Contact Lenders/Credit Card Companies:   
    • Be sure to handle your financial obligation(s) that may be affected during your military service. 
  • Monitor your MyRed account to make sure that all payments have been made. 

When You Return: 

  • Notify the Military & Veteran Success Center about your return. 
    • Schedule an appointment with Joe Brownell, Executive Director of Military Relations and Military & Veteran Success Center.  Joe can be reached at (402) 472-5276 or jbrownell2@unl.edu.  
    • When you return to UNL within three semesters of your initial departure, you do not need to reapply.   
    • When you return to UNL after being gone for military service that has taken you three semesters or more, you will have to contact the Office of Admissions.   
  • Apply for new VA educational benefit – if applicable.
